Imagine being afraid to speak up in public all because of you have bad breath. Having bad breath makes you uncomfortable because you won't be able to talk to any of your friends without you seeing bad expression on their faces. Amazing fact about bad breath is that you won't notice you have bad breath until people around you start telling you.
Bad breath begins from the mouth which means that the solution to bad breath lies in the mouth. Bad breath,medically, is also referred to as "Halitosis or Malodor". There are many causes of bad breath that you need to know and only you can tell which categories you fall in. They include;
- Food: Food particles in the mouth play a great role in bad breath. It increases bacteria and causes a very unpleasant smell. Intake of certain food such as garlic, onions, and spices also leads to bad breath. Medically, it is believed that after you have eaten these foods, they are being taken into the blood stream which are later carried to the lung and affect your breathe. you know the role the lung play in the process of inhalation and exhalation, so with this understanding, you can deduce the fact that food (the examples cited above) causes bad breathes.
- Habit of smoking: This also play an important role in bad breath. Simply because,smokers are more likely to gum disease which is also a source of bad breath.
- Poor hygiene: Not brushing your teeth regularly is also a source of bad breath. Plaque, which is colorless sticky film of bacteria forms on your teeth. If this plaque is not brushed away, it will irritate the gum and lead to periodontitis (an inflammation around the tooth). The tongue also store up bacteria while eating which can produce foul smell.
- Infections in the mouth: Bad breath can also be caused by wounds in the mouth which can be caused by removal of tooth, tooth decay,gum diseases or mouth sores.
- Dry mouth: This is caused by the reduced production of saliva in the mouth. Saliva helps in dissolving particles which can cause mouth odour. This naturally occur when you sleep leading to what they call "morning breath". You should have noticed that your mouth release unpleasant smell whenever you wake up.
- Brush more often: I talked about plaque earlier on this article, that is a colorless sticky of bacteria which causes bad breath. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, with this, be ready to say goodbye to bad breath(that is if you are consistent with it).
- Use mouthwash to rinse your mouth: I am very sure you know mouthwash. It helps in getting rid of bacteria stored in the mouth. Mouthwash is made up of some anti-bacteria agent which is capable of destroying the bacterias in the mouth. Use mouthwash to rinse your mouth daily.
- Washing of the tongue: This plays a great role in bad breath formation because the tongue store up bacterias which causes bad breath. So while brushing your teeth, don't forget to wash your tongue as well because it helps alot.
- Avoid food that cause bad breath: Earlier in this article, I made mention of how food like onion, garlic, ginger and spice cause bad breath. It is better you don't eat it because even after brushing your teeth, the bad breath will still be there.
