It has really been a long time that I posted here, my
apologies to my viewers. In this post, I will talk about studying an health
related courses in Nigeria. When I say health related courses, I’m talking
about medicine and surgery, dentistry and dental surgery, biochemistry, optometry
and so on. Let me explain “medicine and surgery” and “dentistry and dental
surgery” since it is the most chosen course
in Nigeria due to wrong perspectives
which I will explain later in the post.
Medicine and Surgery: This course is believed to be “lucrative”
in Nigeria which I don’t believe that, why? There are alot of doctors outside
there which are still wearing one pair of shoes for the past one year. Medicine
and surgery takes six years to be studied plus one year of housemanship making
it seven years. In most schools, it might be more than that due to incessant
strike in Nigeria Universities. When they are through with the six years, they
will seat for the last professional examination, after this they will be
given a temporary license which will
last for two years. This license will be used to attain an housemanship post in
a teaching hospital like LUTH in Lagos, UCH In Ibadan. Then when they are done
with the one year housemanship, they will proceed to serve the country for one
year. After this, some proceed to do residency for them to specialise in any
area of medicine like paediatrics, gynaecology and so on.
Dentistry and dental surgery: This course is related to the
treatment of the oral cavities like teeth and so on. Students who study this
course does the same courses as their counterpart, medical student till the
fourth year when they part ways to study their main course. This courses has
limited slot in Nigerian Universities. For example, University of Ibadan admit
only 40 students compared to medicine and surgery where over 100 students are
admitted. The course duration is same as medicine which is six years plus one
year housemanship in any teaching hospital. Graduates of dentistry can also
think of studying medicine to become a medical doctor which will take 18months.
You should also know that your BDS, certificate given to dentistry graduate
will be collected from you so that you will be given MBBS, a certificate given
to medicine graduates. You can also specialize in areas under dentistry like maxillofacial
surgery, orthodontics and on.
Now let me discus why I said people are studying “medicine
and surgery” and “dentistry and dental surgery” for the wrong reason.
Most people think being a doctor bring respect which is
actually true but that shouldn’t be your aim because you might get frustrated
in medical school.
Nowadays, in the era of this screening of WAEC and JAMB
result, it is now common for people with As in their waec result to choose medicine and surgery as their
preferred course. Most of these people didn’t actually work for the good
results but with the help of “special centre”.
How lucrative is medicine and surgery or dentistry? These are
the most popular questions asked by aspirant in forums like Nairaland. Make up
your mind, are you studying medicine because of money or because of passion,
please don’t get wrong, I do not mean you shouldn’t be concern about the pay
but if it is the pay that makes you to study medicine, I won’t be surprised when
I hear that you crossed to biochemistry or microbiology.
Hear this, Doctors are not rich but they are comfortable
enough to buy what they want to buy. If you think doctors are actually rich
then they ought to be on the Top 100 richest man in the world. Don’t forget
that “medicine and surgery” and “dentistry and dental surgery” are humanitarian
courses.
Lastly, Study for passion and excel while study for money
and fail. Choose.
